Real Time Ultrasound

It is with great pleasure that we can announce Amanda Osbourne from AJ Physio will be joining us on Thursday 14 July to offer Real Time Ultrasound.

Real Time Ultrasound (RTUS) is a diagnostic tool used to evaluate and retrain the deep stabilising muscles (the core muscles) where needed.  Amanda will measure firing patterns and endurance times of your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles.  Using the RTUS allows for real time study of these deep muscles as they contract and allows both the patient and the physiotherapist to view the contraction as it happens.  This shows you what the ideal muscle response feels like.

Each assessment is 20 minutes long and is charged at $80.00.  Receipts will be emailed to you for claiming with your Private Health Fund.  You will be required to drink 400 mls of water 30 minutes prior to your appointment to ensure the bladder is full and a clear picture can be seen.

Please contact Caroline at reception to make a booking.  Appointments are available from 7AM till mid-morning.

Looking after your Immune System

with Caroline Connolly – Naturopath

Autumn is certainly upon us as the weather outside turns cold and wet and the coughs and colds have started. Ensuring your immune system is healthy now will set you up for better resistance through the winter so you have a greater chance of avoiding those dreaded colds and flu.

Your immune and lymphatic systems work together to act as your body’s defence and garbage collection systems. Defending against invading pathogens such as virus’ and bacteria, and eliminating these unwanted bugs. Now is the time to implement some immune boosting strategies to ensure you are fighting fit before winter arrives. Below are some tips and recipes to get you started.

Nutrition

Poor nutrition and too much fat or sugar in the diet is associated with poor immune function. The following nutrients are required for a strong and healthy immune system:

Iron

Zinc

Vitamin A

Vitamin E

B vitamins

Vitamin C

Take Action Early

If you have a cold or flu infection you need to take precautions that will prevent its spread and reduce its severity and duration. Speak to your healthcare practitioner at the very earliest signs of an infection. If you begin taking the appropriate herbs and nutrients immediately you can often prevent the infection from taking hold. Choosing your own products is common but by doing so it is possible to disrupt the body’s natural balance. Your healthcare practitioner will be able to prescribe good quality ‘practitioner only’ medicines that are best suited to your individual health situation.

Caroline is available for Naturopathic and Nutritional consultations on Thursday afternoons. Please phone her on Reception between 8am and 12pm Monday to Friday to make a booking. Find out more about the state of your health on a whole new level.

Immune Boosting Tea Recipe

Juice of 1 lemon

Rind of ½ lemon

½ cinnamon stick

½ bunch fresh thyme

3cm fresh ginger root grated

2 – 3 tspn honey

Add boiling water and stand for 5 – 10 minutes before drinking.

We can gain further understanding of ourselves on a deeper level through assessment tools, awareness and trigger point therapy. If you would like to create change in your body/life but don’t feel like you are quite getting there, please feel free to make a booking or to speak to Amy for more information.

Naturopathy

Caroline Connolly, our receptionist is a practising Naturopath and is available for appointments on Thursday afternoon/evenings. Caroline is a fully qualified and accredited Naturopath and Nutritionist with a degree in Health Science (Complementary Medicine) and has been practicing from Frenchs Forest for the past 3 years.

Naturopathy is a holistic form of healthcare that encompasses all aspects of a person’s health, lifestyle and diet. Naturopaths use natural supplements such as herbal medicine and vitamins or minerals to help restore the body to its natural healthy balance. Nutrition and diet are a big focus of the naturopathic consultation as food is an integral part of life. Sometimes all you need is some help with your diet to regain and maintain your health. Using food as your medicine can alleviate symptoms, boost energy levels and improve your overall wellbeing.

Naturopathy can assist with most conditions that you would normally see a doctor for. It can be used instead of conventional medical care if you are looking for a natural solution or it can be used in conjunction with your current treatment for issues such as digestive problems, weight loss, hormonal issues, stress or sleep problems and immune issues to name a few.

Caroline has included a recipe which we are hoping will become a regular feature in our newsletter. To get some more info on how to cook Quinoa, pop in and see Caroline at reception.

Quinoa Salad

Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa) is native to South America and is generally thought of as a grain (although technically is a seed) and is now readily available in the health food aisle in supermarkets. It can be used as a breakfast cereal (similar to porridge) or as a side dish, the same way you would use rice. Quinoa is very high in protein and includes all the 9 essential amino acids making it a complete protein. Quinoa contains high levels of the amino acid lysine, which is essential for tissue growth and repair. Quinoa is also high in manganese, magnesium, iron, copper and phosphorus.

Ingredients

1 cup quinoa

2 cups water

1 stock cube (any flavour)

1 carrot

Hand full green beans

¼ cup pepitas (pumpkin seeds)

¼ cup sunflower seeds

1 avocado

Method

Place quinoa in a fine-meshed strainer and run cold water over it, gently rubbing the seeds together with your hands to give it a good wash.

Place quinoa, stock cube and water in a saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer until cooked through (same cooking style as for rice). This can take approx 10 – 20mins, check it occasionally to ensure it does not boil dry.

Chop carrot into small cubes

Chop beans into approx 1.5cm lengths

Dice avocado

When quinoa is cooked, drain any excess water and place all ingredients into salad bowl. Toss to combine and serve. You can add a squeeze of lemon and a dash of olive oil as a quick dressing if required.

New Faces

A big welcome to Sally, Catherine and Joey! Sally comes from an extensive Physiotherapy and Pilates background. She is available for privates on Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings.

Catherine joins us from a rich background in Pilates starting out as a Fitness Instructor she went on to train at Body Control in London. You can visit Catherine in the studio on a Wednesday morning or take one of her allegro classes on a Thursday morning.

Joey joins us as your welcome party at the front desk. We are sure you will make her feel welcome also. You can catch her from Monday to Fridays from 8am – 12pm.

Re-assessments

We have been busy working on structured re-assessments to ensure all clients who have one can get better movement and more understanding of their bodies. We recommend everyone have a re-assessment after their first 10 – 30 sessions and then once yearly. Please see Joey for available times to see Sally or Louise during July. Jakki will also be available from August.

Housekeeping

It would be wonderful if all clients could sign the sign in sheet when arriving for class. We keep these on record and like them to be accurate for future reference. We also like to have them in the case of an emergency so we know who we need to be looking out for.

If you don’t already have one, please see Joey to register a username and password for our online program. You can access your details and keep up to date.

For those of you who are reading the paper version of our newsletter, and haven’t received it via email, we don’t have your email address. If you would like to receive email updates, please pass on your email to Joey and also log on to our website www.pilatescentremosman.com.au and subscribe to our newsletters.

Renovations

Thank you to everyone for your patience during our renovation period. We are enjoying our fresh, new space and hope you are too!

Moving Through Winter

During these winter months we tend to lose quality in our posture and our beathing due to coughs, colds and holding our shoulders up in an attempt to feel warm and shield ourselves from that winter chill. Our joints feel stiff and cold.

Take the time to focus on deep breathing to warm the body and improve circulation. Before leaving the house in the morning, warm your joints by flexing, pointing and circling. Focus on one joint at a time sending the intention of warmth and comfort to assist you in better movement.
